Dir: Amber Fares | USA / Palestine | 2015 | 78 mins
A documentary telling the inspiring, incendiary story of the first all-female race car driving team in the Middle East. Speed Sisters follows the five young women in the team, observing their lives in the West Bank, with tense military occupation sadly the norm and their civil liberties restricted. Vying for recognition in a male-dominated sport, we watch them battle repression of all kinds, from societal pressures to internal disputes. As fast and as furious as the cars, Amber Fares’ engaging documentary is a stereotype-busting portrait of modern womanhood and a much-needed glimpse into Palestinian lives.
