A collaboration between experimental filmmakers Ben Rivers (Two Years at Sea) and Ben Russell (Let Each One Go Where He May), A Spell to Ward off the Darkness is explores possible utopias in the post-modern era. A single figure, played by artist-musician Robert A. A. Lowe, connects the sections as we observe him in three situations: wandering through a commune on Estonian island, ekeing out a lone existence in the Finnish wilderness and finally, fronting a screaming black-metal band in Norway. Visually arresting, it’s an enquiry into transcendence, a film investigating the possibilities of life against sublime, almost otherworldly landscapes.
