A landmark film of 1960s New Hollywood and the counterculture, Easy Rider is in many ways the ultimate American road movie, epitomising both its time and (with its timeless soundtrack) a certain type of cool. Eloquent on the divided social landscape of 1960s America, in places permissive and repressed, it follows Wyatt and Billy (Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, both iconic), Harley-riding hippies who, after a drug deal in southern California, travel cross-country in search of spiritual truths; meeting with bigotry from various denizens of small-town America, and also encountering other travellers on similar journeys to alternative lifestyles.
