Isabelle Huppert (8 Women) gives perhaps her finest performance to date in Michael Haneke’s (Hidden, Amour, The White Ribbon) austerely brilliant psychosexual thriller, which won a slew of awards on its 2001 release. She plays Erika, professor at a prestigious music conservatory who, though in her forties, still lives with her mother. While she has a cool, professional facade, her repression manifests itself in a passion for voyeurism and sadomasochism; and when she meets young student Walter, a mutual obsession develops. Exploring ideas of intimacy, fear and control, The Piano Teacher is one of Haneke’s most fascinating and seminal works.
