Jordan Peele’s follow-up to Get Out is an inventive, ambitious and truly terrifying horror, drawing on the rampant divisions of contemporary American society and a rich vein of film history. A superb Lupita Nyong’o plays Adelaide Wilson, a young mother returning home with her family. Haunted by a childhood trauma, her latent fears become reality as four masked strangers descend on them; and when the masks come off, the Wilsons are horrified to find that each attacker mirrors each of them. A satirical doppelganger nightmare of the American dream, full of wit and terror and uproar, Us confirms Peele as one of the most purely exciting filmmakers at work today.
