Dir: Jafar Panahi| Iran | 2015 | 82 mins | Persian with English Subtitles
Cast: Jafar Panahi, Hana Saeidi

It’s easy to see why Taxi Tehran, the intelligent, witty and triumphant latest from Jafar Panahi (Offside, Closed Curtain) took the coveted Golden Bear at the Berlinale. Still making films despite his 2010 ban, Panahi is shown driving a taxi round the vibrant streets of the capital and talking up his passengers. All non-professional actors in roles across Iranian society – young and old, rich and poor, traditionalists and modernists; from pirate video vendors to human rights advocates – they discuss their lives and the challenges they face. A testament to Panahi’s creative courage, it’s a powerful statement on the necessity of freedom of speech.

“Engaging and disarming, a freewheeling semi-improv piece of guerrilla filmmaking […] a joyous ride” ★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
