Dir: James Ivory | UK | 1985 | 117 mins
Cast: Helena Bonham-Carter, Julian Sands, Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow, Judi Dench
James Ivory’s arresting romantic adaptation of E. M. Forster’s classic, Edwardian-era novel is surely bound for classic status in its own right. Helena Bonham-Carter gives a star-making performance as Lucy Honeychurch, touring Italy with her pedantic cousin Charlotte (Maggie Smith) when she stumbles into a rapturous encounter with free-spirited George (Julian Sands). Back in England, she embarks on a more socially-sanctioned relationship with priggish Cecil (Daniel Day-Lewis) but is soon cast into doubt and disarray. With moments of high comedy alongside genuine poignancy, and support from Judi Dench, Simon Callow, Rupert Graves and Denholm Elliott, it is a profoundly enjoyable and superbly realised film.
