A noirish romance filmed and set during WWII, Casablanca’s appeal never fades. Humphrey Bogart (African Queen) epitomises laconic cool as expat Rick Blaine, running a nightclub in Casablanca and treading a difficult line with Vichy and Gestapo forces when his old lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) walks through the door. Perfect casting, nostalgic songs and an endlessly quotable script; it’s a truly sublime film.
