Dir: Nicholas Ray | 1955 | USA | 111 mins Cast: James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo
James Dean achieves a timeless cool in Nicholas Ray’s (In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar) classic portrait of 50s rebellion. He plays Jim Stark, a 17-year-old whose troubled past has forced him and his warring parents to move to LA, where he quickly starts causing havoc. Making friends with Plato (Sal Mineo) and Judy (Natalie Wood), he also comes into conflict with Buzz (Corey Allen); and finds it almost impossible to stay out of trouble. Enormously influential, Rebel… was a milestone in the cinematic portrayal of young people, and immortalised Dean as an icon for his generation.
“Dean’s finest film […] what makes the film so powerful is both the sympathy it extends towards all the characters and the precise expressionism of Ray’s direction” Time Out
