Dir: Ingmar Bergman | Sweden | 1957 | 92 mins | Swedish w/English subtitles
Cast: Victor Sjöström, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand, Max von Sydow

One of Bergman’s greatest, warmest and most moving films, Wild Strawberries boasts a magnificent performance by Swedish actor and director Victor Sjöström as Isak Borg; an ageing, grouchy and egotistical academic driving to Lund to accept an award. Accompanied by his pregnant daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), the trip unexpectedly piques his memory. Recalling his past – via reveries, nightmares and illuminating encounters with family members and strangers alike – he revisits his childhood, his relationship with his mother and a lost romance with Sara (Bibi Andersson, who switches playfully between two roles) as he joyfully comes to terms with both his life and his impending death.
