Dir: Ali Soozandeh | Germany/Austria | 2017 | 96 mins | Persian w/Eng subtitles
Voice cast: Elmira Rafizadeh, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Arash Marandi

Iranian-expat filmmaker Ali Soozandeh’s striking animation (his feature debut) delves inside Tehrani society; telling stories of covert sex, drugs and corruption uneasily coexisting alongside strict religious law. An ensemble piece, it follows the interweaving lives of three strong-willed women and a young male musician, via distinctive rotoscoped animation and an eye-popping palette that create a vivid comic book aesthetic. An illuminating and bracing portrait of contemporary Iran, its hypocrisies and double standards, Tehran Taboo has earned comparisons to the likes of Marjane Satrapis’ Persepolis.
