Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, Rachel Weisz give heartfelt performances in Derek Cianfrance’s (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) sweeping, tremendously moving period drama adapted from the 2015 ML Stedman bestseller. Tom (Fassbender) is a World War I veteran who, yearning for solitude, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on a remote island in Western Australia. Falling deeply in love with the beautiful Isabel (Vikander), they marry and try for a baby, but to no avail. Miscarriage and loneliness amplify their despair until an unexpected opportunity (in the guise of a near miracle) appears and they become a family – but at whose cost?
