Bill Nighy plays a detective on the hunt in Juan Carlos Medina’s lurid British horror-thriller, adapted by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass) from Peter Ackroyd’s 1994 mystery novel and co-starring Olivia Cooke, Douglas Booth and Eddie Marsan. Scotland Yard detective John Kildare (Nighy), back in the city to uncover a Jack the Ripper-esque figure, the ‘Golem’; whose gruesome murders have shaken an East End community. Vividly shot with an eye for the macabre and lit up further by Goldman’s urgent, witty script, it’s a refreshingly feminist take on a classic genre and an immensely satisfying watch.

“This unlikely feminist Jack the Ripper-esque thriller cleverly unpicks late-Victorian London’s social structures” **** Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian
