Dir. Charles Laughton, USA, 1955, 93 mins
Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish
On being released from prison, self-styled ‘preacher’ Harry Powell (Mitchum), goes searching for the stolen money of his former cellmate, the whereabouts of which is known only to the cellmate’s young children. Sensing that Powell is not all he seems, the children flee, resulting in a deadly game of ‘cat & mouse’ to survive. Originally ignored on its release, The Night of The Hunter is now rightly regarded as a masterpiece of cinema, expertly incorporating elements of film noir, fairy tale, thriller and southern gothic.
‘A monochrome masterpiece, pure cinematic alchemy and just about every other superlative that spells genius’ Trevor Lewis, Empire *****
