Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of Berkeley journalist and poet Mark O’Brien, The Sessions tells the story of Mark, a polio victim who is paralysed from the neck down. At the age of 38, and fearing his time is coming to an end, Mark decides that he wants to lose his virginity. After seeking the guidance of his priest (Macy), Mark comes into contact with ‘sex surrogate’ Cheryl (Hunt), who agrees to help him over six sessions, where the two begin to form a deep emotional bond.

‘Transforms ‘taboo’ subject matter into a humorous, humane and uncomplicated pleasure.’ Total Film, ****
