Dir: Robert Wise | USA | 1965 | 174 mins
Cast: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood
See Julie Andrews sing to the hills in this gloriously restored print of Robert Wise’s enduring Technicolor musical. Andrews is Maria, the tomboyish young postulant at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain (Christopher Plummer) with seven children, and brings a new love of life and music to them; against the encroaching darkness of World War II. Tuneful and heartwarming, it’s based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding the war.
