Stephen Fingleton’s BAFTA-nominated debut is superb; a brutal, gritty and alarmingly believable post-apocalyptic thriller set in a time of starvation. The survivalist of the title lives off the grid, hidden deep in the forest; relying on primal instincts, luck and his wits to stay alive. Then a starving woman and her daughter come to his refuge, seemingly seeking to trade. Suspicious of all strangers he strikes a bargain for bed and board; but it’s a bargain that generates a profound tension between them as they maintain their struggle to stay alive in a harsh and violent world.
“Equal parts arthouse and grindhouse, this dystopian drama makes for an impressive, unsettling debut.” **** Mark Kermode, Observer
