Studio Ghibli anime master Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies) has adapted one of Japan’s most famous folktales, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, in this utterly enchanting animation. When a bamboo cutter happens upon a mysterious shining stalk, he cuts it open to find a tiny girl inside, the size of his thumb. Taking her home, he and his wife raise her, and watch her grow into an enchanting young woman. The mystery of where she has come from intrigues all who meet her: leading the Emperor himself to try and win her heart… This beautiful, hand-drawn masterwork was decades in the making, and is a superb addition to the Ghibli canon.

“A rich and astonishing swan song” **** Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
