Dir: Annemarie Jacir | Palestine | 2017 | 95 mins | Arabic w/English subtitles
Cast: Mohammad Bakri, Saleh Bakri, Maria Zreik, Leila Bakri
A father and his estranged son reunite in this award-winning comedy-drama and road movie by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir (Salt of this Sea, When I Saw You). After years abroad, Shadi (Saleh Bakri) returns to Nazareth’s Arab community to honour his traditional “wajib” (or custom) to personally invite guests to his sister’s wedding. Driving round the city with his father (Mohammad Bakri), tensions between them grow; with Jacir exploring what it means to be a Palestinian living abroad versus a Palestinian at home (in an Israeli city). Full of wry, perceptive humour, Wajib is a lively, bittersweet tale about the easily blurred line between love and duty and a snapshot of modern-day Nazareth.
